Years of Experience Required:

Seven to ten years, depending on level of education

Education Needed:

Bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering or a related field

Skills Needed:

Experience with electrical engineering; experience working with software developers; proven record of advanced technology product development; strong collaborative skills

There are many hardware engineer jobs available in VR and AR. Headsets are constantly being developed and improved, as are hand controllers and sensors. There is even VR development in exoskeletons, or bodysuits that allow for a more immersive and responsive VR experience. These suits respond to virtual environments to provide users with a full-body experience. In general, though, hardware engineer positions in AR and VR are highly skilled, relatively advanced positions. They aren’t necessarily management-level positions, but they aren’t entry-level either.

For example, Oculus has a division called Core Tech that develops, designs, and tests cutting-edge VR technology. A hardware engineer position on the Core Tech team requires at least a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. However, Oculus prefers applicants have a master’s degree or PhD. Even with these degrees, experience is incredibly important. A recent graduate with a master’s in electrical engineering isn’t likely to walk out of the university and right into a hardware engineer job on the Core Tech team. They’ll have to put in some years at a lower-level hardware engineering position to build up their experience.

Core Tech team members are expected to have at least seven years of experience in consumer product design. Additionally, Core Tech looks for at least seven years of experience in system-level design, including circuit design and debugging. Circuit design is related to the electrical wiring of the hardware. Debugging is related to solving system problems or defects.

The Core Tech team recruits hardware engineers who are strong collaborators and are able to manage projects that require input from multiple teams. In general, the ability to collaborate is important to most AR and VR employers. Employees must be able to work well with others. It’s not enough to be a genius at electrical engineering.
